Sarasota is a city in Sarasota County located on the central west coast of Florida. The city's official limits include Sarasota Bay, along with several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The city is known for its world-renowned beaches and islands, which are called keys, and they include Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Longboat Key. These areas are noted worldwide for the quality of their beaches. The city began to obtain a liberal reputation as a haven for artists in the early 1920s. In the years that followed, artists of various genres disciplines and interests, including writers, performers, musicians, and architects, have been attracted to the community. The City Offers A Relaxing Living Environment Sarasota is a relaxing community, and offers the same amenities of big-city living, making it a perfect place for the family to have fun, relax and work at the same time. Here, single folk, retirees and families can indulge in the pleasure of basking in the wonderful sunsets, relaxing in the city's breathtaking pristine beaches, and beam with glee at the excellent array of residences and real estate choices, art museums and galleries, cultural activities like operas,plays, ballets, musicals, symphony orchestras, and a host of outdoor participant sports activities. The City Has Great Shopping And Leisure Destinations Shopping is a a major leisure activity that families prefer to do regularly. In this city, there are a lot of shopping choices, and families can find a lot of things to buy, ranging from purchasing antiques and art pieces, to clothes,sports, outdoor equipment and even historical memorabilia. The city has around 30 art galleries and museums, which make it an ideal location for families to indulge in viewing paintings, artifacts and other historical memorabilia, as well as other art forms which showcase stuff from Asian and European art, to classical and modern paintings. The City Has Taken Steps To Maintain A Clean And Green Environment The population of Sarasota County has grown from around 150,000 in 1980 to over 365,000 residents in 2006. The area has seen an addition of around 10,000 new residents each year. Migration to Sarasota used to be primarily from the Midwest, however now, its new residents come mostly from the northeast. The city has also been very progressive in the past eight years, and bought millions of dollars of land to preserve for future generations. The city has also taken a strong environmental stance, as it created Green buildings, banned summer fertilizing, replaced thousands of septic tanks that used to dump raw sewage and effluent into the intra-coastal, worked to open Midnight Pass and tackled many other quality of life concerns. Sarasota's Cost Of Living Index Is At Par With Other Great Cities Based on the national average, the city's quality of living index is at par with the best cities in the US.
